Is there a way to "spoof" a text message?

So I know about caller ID spoofing but is there a way someone could send me a text message (either one of my contacts or from a number not saved to my phone) and make it come up like a text from one of my own contacts? And pop up under an ongoing conversation? And if so, is there a way I could find out the originating number? I have the palm pixi and the one thing I really hate about it is that it doesn't log details of calls or texts after midnight, it just shows the call/text and says "Fri". Thanks in advance! :)
