Can the police trace a call I received that I think was spoofed?

I recently had something stolen from me. The police were informed..etc... The thieves called me before they stole the item because I was selling it on craigslist. I believe the number that showed up on my caller ID is a spoofed number. If I do a reverse phone number search on this number, it comes up as people who were NOT the thieves. Hence, I believe they used a program to generate a different caller ID from the actual phone they were using. Are the police going to be able to trace this call to the actual phone it was called from?
